when lens extend, easy damage by sidway force or not?

Hello,



I have had this wonder since day 1 of using digital camera in 2006.



I am always extra careful when lens extend and make sure not in crowded place when people can knock at it from the side



and I worry if sometimes I forget and put lens into bag with lens extended



Is it necessary? sometimes I think it is in a tough plastic shell and sideway knock doesn't matter



but sometimes i think sideway knock can move lens element out of intended position so damage it



if it is not important than why if u read lens manual, it always advice u to retract lens before putting in camera bag



If it cannot be damage by sideway force than it should be ok to extend and put into camera bag



Anyone can comment on this?
