The wife, dog and I went on a little road trip in October. We stopped in Sleeping Bear Dunes on our way to Petoskey. It was gorgeous. Hopefully these photos capture the beauty of Northern Michigan. Sleeping Bear Dune by engineerd, on Flickr Melissa and Mocha by engineerd, on Flickr Covered Bridge by engineerd, on Flickr For this next picture, I climbed up to the top of a very steep dune using my tripod as a walking stick. I was able to get several pretty good shots from up there, but this one really captured the colors well. Fall Colors by engineerd, on Flickr I did something here that our film purist brethren will cringe at, but whatev. This photo was cool because of the subject, but between the sky and the sand it was pretty washed out. Plus, I was facing into the sun and Mocha's dark face was just a black blob. So I made it black and white and did some other touchup work to make it more crisp. I like how it turned out. Melissa and Mocha B&W by engineerd, on Flickr I walked down to the lake to see what was there. Melissa was tired and just hung out with the dog while I was off doing my thing. On my way back up to where they were there was this one bright yellow bush. Queens of the Dunes by engineerd, on Flickr Down by the lake was a little beach with some great vistas. Ironically, my favorite shot from down there doesn't include the water, but instead this piece of driftwood and the dunes. Dune Shot by engineerd, on Flickr I hope you like these!

Ah!! Now I know who "engineerd" is! I had no idea who you were... Thought just some guy.
Nice set! That covered bridge shot is really nice. Is that in the driving loop? I don't remember that. Is there a small stream below?
How did the wife do? Lol. My wife HATES it when I take time during our vacations for tripod pics. She just stands there impatient with Griffin our dog. It's a delicate balencing act with photography and family vacations.

Dustin, it looks like a fun trip! I enjoyed seeing your photos. Looking at your photos I see you are shooting with a Canon D60. In regards to your black and white photo, the next time you are out shooting try manual mode in place of the AV mode. Once you get use to manual mode you will find you end up with much better exposures then letting the camera guess at it. You may already be doing this, but if not, be sure to save your files in RAW. This gives you the full dynamic range of your camera for editing compared to JPG.
One other fun thing to do when you have your tripod, take multiple shots of the same scene except at 1 to 2 f-stops over and under expose to be used for an HDR (High Dynamic Range) image.
Your photos make me want to go on a road trip! Thanks for sharing!

How did the wife do? Lol. My wife HATES it when I take time during our vacations for tripod pics. She just stands there impatient with Griffin our dog. It's a delicate balencing act with photography and family vacations. Same here. She was mildly annoyed when I wanted to go down to the lake. Oh well. She puts up with me! The covered bridge is at the beginning of the driving loop. Melissa was getting really annoyed since I was waiting so long to take some photos. I wanted to wait until there was no traffic. Is that so unreasonable? Thanks for the tips! I am shooting in RAW. Going full manual is my next big step. I'll play around with that next time I go out shooting.

Nice shots Dustin!! Kudos for taking a tough road to a shot instead of just accepting whats in front of you. You gotta work for the good shots!.
And yeah, as far as wives and picture taking. Mine has actually gotten better over the years. She likes my photography now and actually helps scope out shots and waits for me to set them up. In the beginning, not so much.

She gets annoyed when I randomly stop somewhere to take a photo, or when she wants to get going and I'm waiting for the perfect moment to take a shot. Other than that, she's been pretty supportive and wants to use some of the photos I take on our vacations on a blank living room wall.
