I have a speedlite 550 ex flash. I would like to start learning how to use this flash. what settings would I use?

Lynette, what camera are you using and what type of photos are you planning to use the flash for? The 550 EX is a good flash. It can work wireless with an IR source and high speed sync which can help you control the ambient light levels while shooting outdoors. One of the fun things with flash, with a light stand flash mount and umbrella you can take some very nice portrait shots just about anywhere. Add a second flash and you can make some very impressive shots. As an example of two flash photo, this one is with one of my flashes behind Nia, the vampire to light the back wall. The second flash is directed into an umbrella focused to light Nia's left side of her face.

+1 on the Strobist blog, lots of great info, also the flash forum at Photography-on-the-net (potn for short) is full of great info and alot of nice people to answer questions.
